Evelyn, Estepona, Spain
Evelyn and her husband Alan have lived on Spain’s Costa del Sol since 1987, which, as its name suggests, is blessed with 320 days of sunshine each year. The typically Spanish village of Cancelada is on their doorstep and close to the lovely towns of Estepona and Marbella. They have been in their three storey townhouse close to the beach since 2000.
Your host
Evelyn & Alan
My employment background has been in general and marine insurance. Initially as an insurance broker in England and holding managerial roles for most of my career. When we moved to Spain in 1987, it was a natural progression to serve the expatriate market here in the same line of work. In 2013, Alan and I set up our own insurance agency with one of Spain’s leading insurers, working from our at home. However teaching is something I have always wanted to do, so the same year I studied and gained TEFL qualifications.
I was employed in a private Spanish school for three years teaching adults English and I now I work from home teaching on a one to one basis. I am highly motivated and a very warm and caring teacher, with lots of enthusiasm for this type of work, which I enjoy so very much. My students’ needs are varied and I provide interesting lessons that are both stimulating and encouraging. I feel a great sense of achievement personally when they do well.
The home
The lounge, dining area and kitchen are on the first floor of our house, with a lovely terrace overlooking the gardens and pool. Our bedroom is on the top floor, on the ground floor we have a large room we use as our insurance office, with virtually all business transacted these days via telephone and email. The guest facilities are at the rear of the house and are made up of a double bedroom, with a marble tiled private en-suite bathroom. Sliding patio doors lead to a compact garden with a barbecue area, and a gate out to the swimming pool.
Location
We are fortunate to live in a place which allows us to enjoy a lot of time outdoors, going for walks, gardening or just relaxing by the pool or at the beach. We socialise with a large group of friends, made up of many different nationalities. It’s easy to enjoy a wide range of cultural events here, because the area is vibrant with tourism and both of us really like showing people around this wonderful area.
Cancelada is situated in the municipality of Estepona. Marbella is a short 20 mns drive and Malaga, a city rich in culture and the birthpace of Picasso is 45 mns away. In the other direction you can reach Gibraltar in 35 mns.
Things to do
Closer to home, within a few minutes walk, there are shops, bars, restaurants and sporting facilities, such as horse riding, lawn bowling, gyms. Tennis and swimming is on site, within our friendly building complex. For the golfer, there are literally dozens of courses, many to championship standard. Fairs and fiestas take place every month between May and October with a chance to join in with the locals and experience true Andalucian flavour.
